Hormone Restoration

What are hormones and what is all the modern-day fuss about hormone balance? The word hormone comes from the Greek meaning “to excite” or “set in motion.” Hundreds of bodily functions and processes rely on communication from your hormones which act as little chemical messengers in our bodies. In short, hormones literally run the show! They communicate messages between your organs and tissues. Hormones help regulate appetite, digestion, female menstrual cycles, mood, sleep, metabolism, lactation, stress, reproduction, growth and development, response to injury, and much more.

Bio-Identical

If hormones become imbalanced your cells are not able to carry out their normal everyday functions. This may lead to unwanted side effects and symptoms of either too high or too low of hormones in the body. Often people may not even realize symptoms they are experiencing are hormonally related and continue to suffer in silence. Here are a few symptoms related to imbalanced hormones:

  • In general, there is a societal acceptance of women and men suffering with fluctuations in hormones throughout the various stages of life. People are becoming hormonally exhausted or experiencing a reduction in hormone production at earlier ages. Unhealthy lifestyle habits and daily stressors continue to pile up. We are seeing more and more exposure to endocrine disruptors such as BPA (bisphenol A from manufactured plastics), phthalates (used as plasticizers), PFAS chemicals, heavy metals, etc. Everyday products such as household cleaning supplies, cosmetics and skincare, food preservatives, manufactured pharmaceuticals, etc. are also culprits of containing these endocrine disruptors. Various environmental exposures, emotional and physical stressors all take a toll on our hormones. These factors have the potential to create conditions for hormones to become imbalanced in the body leading to a host of unpleasant symptoms.

The good news is our bio-identical hormone restoration therapies can help you achieve balanced hormone levels to get you feeling great again! Furthermore, hormonal imbalance goes beyond simply managing unwanted symptoms. Even in the absence of symptoms, having your hormones in harmony has demonstrated reduced risk factors for diseases including dementia, heart disease, osteoporosis, and even certain types of cancers.

  • Hormones will only act on receptors located in target tissues if they fit properly. Think of the good old lock and key analogy. You would not try to jam the incorrect key into a lock to try to open a door would you? Same goes for hormone therapies. Synthetic forms of hormones do not mimic the human body's endogenous hormones and therefore may not work optimally, can create unwanted side effects, and increase risk factors for harm.

At Custom Health Pharmacy we compound bio-identical  hormones meaning they are the closest replica of human hormones (keys) made physiologically within the body to fit into your receptors (lock) to help carry out cellular functions. This form can be utilized and eliminated from the body with much less risk or harm. We compound specific dosing and active ingredients offered through various formulations tailored to your individual hormonal blueprint, none of the “...one size fits all...” approach. Each customer is unique and therefore deserves individualized medication.

  • At Custom Health Pharmacy we view hormone restoration as an important element to living a happy, healthy life and would love the opportunity to work with you and/or your doctor to provide lasting solutions. Proper testing of hormones at the correct time is critical. We have several modalities to test including saliva, urine, and blood spot testing. If you would like to have your hormones tested and to consider restoration options, please utilize our appointment scheduling tab on our website or call the pharmacy to set up an appointment with Kymberly Klimek, PharmD., Hormone Specialist.

We also work with several integrative and functional medicine providers who would be happy to help you on your journey to wellness, including offering various hormone testing modalities. Please see our list of providers we regularly work with. Do not see your doctor listed? We would love to work with any providers who would find the benefit in helping optimize hormones.

  • We respect that some individuals may not want to take supplemental hormones life- long. Our pharmacy staff is dedicated to helping you achieve lasting health by also looking at lifestyle and root cause imbalances in efforts to help you work towards your wellness goals. If you have further questions about hormones, please do not hesitate to call our pharmacy to speak with our friendly and knowledgeable pharmacists!

Note, a prescription from a licensed healthcare practitioner is required for bio-identical hormone therapy and other compounded medications. Prior to considering BHRT therapy we suggest having a discussion with your primary care provider to see if they would be willing to work with us in supporting your individual hormone replacement therapy needs (you may even bring them a copy of our referral form listed on our website for your ease and convenience). If you do not have a PCP that you regularly interact with, we are also happy to refer you to a few options of providers who support hormone testing and treatment and who work confidently with our Hormone Specialist.
